Group class up to 6 participants. All tools and materials provided for the duration of the workshop.

Each person will be given a chopping block, carving axe and spoon carving knives to learn how to carve a spoon from a piece of local wood.

Workshop Outline:

10.30am -11am: Inroduction, Health and Safety and Safe Carving Rules

11am - 1pm: Axe Work - Using a sharp carving axe we will carve out the rough shape of our spoons from a piece of fresh local Birch wood.

1.30pm - 4.30pm - Using our spoon carving knives we will finish our spoons by whittling.

We will break for lunch around 1pm

No previous experience is necessary.

Participants must be at least 18 years of age.

Disclaimer:

Please be aware that this workshop involves the use of sharp woodworking tools. You will be using a very sharp carving axe and equally sharp carving knives. You will be shown the safest ways to use these tools but the tools and techniques on using them must be respected at all times.

Don't let this put you off, spoon carving is an extremely satisfying and relaxing craft which is made safer through the use of properly maintained and sharp tools. Greenwood is easier to carve than seasoned/dry wood as it still retains a lot of moisture.
